The trouble is that myths often contain a small kernel of truth wrapped in a layer of exaggeration, making them feel believable — even when the science tells a different story.

Myth 1 — Detox Diets Cleanse Your Body
The word "detox" sells supplements, teas and juice cleanses worth billions every year. The promise: flush out the "toxins" that have built up from modern life. The reality is quite different from the marketing.
Your body already runs a sophisticated, continuous detoxification system. The liver breaks down potentially harmful compounds — from alcohol to medications to metabolic waste — into forms that can be safely removed. The kidneys filter blood around 40 times a day, excreting waste products in urine. The lungs expel carbon dioxide with every breath, and the skin releases small amounts of waste through sweat.
No tea, juice fast or pill meaningfully enhances these built-in processes in healthy people. Proponents of detox products rarely specify which "toxins" they remove or offer credible evidence that the products do what they claim. If you have concerns about actual toxic exposures — heavy metals, medications, poisoning — that is a medical situation requiring professional care, not a wellness product.
Drinking plenty of water, eating fibre-rich vegetables and minimising alcohol genuinely support liver and kidney health. Myth 2 — Some Foods Have Negative Calories
The idea is appealing: eat celery, cucumber or grapefruit and burn more energy digesting them than they contain. Unfortunately, this is not how digestion works.
Digesting food does use energy — the process is called the thermic effect of food (TEF). But TEF typically accounts for only about 10% of your total daily energy expenditure. For a stalk of celery (about 6 calories), you might burn 0.5–1 calorie digesting it. The celery still contributes net energy; it is simply very low in calories.
That does not make low-calorie, high-water-content vegetables any less valuable. Cucumbers, leafy greens, radishes and similar foods are nutritious, filling and excellent additions to any eating pattern. They just will not magically create a calorie deficit on their own.
Myth 3 — Carbohydrates Are Bad for You
Carbohydrates have been demonised in waves of popular diets since at least the 1970s. The truth is more nuanced: the type and amount of carbohydrate matters far more than the mere presence of carbohydrate in your diet.
Carbohydrates are the body's preferred fuel for the brain and muscles. Glucose — a simple sugar derived from carbohydrates — is the primary energy source for your brain, which uses roughly 20% of your total energy despite being only about 2% of your body weight. Cutting carbohydrates dramatically is not inherently dangerous for most people, but blanket elimination is not necessary for good health, and very low-carb diets may not suit everyone.

Myth 4 — Eating After 8 PM Makes You Fat
The clock-based rule — stop eating at a certain hour or gain weight — is one of the stickiest nutrition myths around. It makes intuitive sense: calories consumed at night cannot be burned off with activity. But the body's metabolism does not switch into "fat-storage mode" at a set hour.
What matters most for body composition is your total energy intake relative to your total energy expenditure over time. Late-night eating is often associated with weight gain in studies, but researchers generally attribute this to the types of food eaten in the evening (high-calorie snacks) and to higher overall calorie intake, not the timing itself.
That said, there is genuine science behind time-restricted eating — eating within a consistent window of hours — as a way some people find it easier to manage their overall intake. But the mechanism is about what people eat, not some metabolic magic tied to the clock.
Myth 5 — You Need to Eat Protein Immediately After Exercise
The "anabolic window" — the idea that you must consume protein within 30 minutes of finishing a workout or lose your gains — was a dominant belief in fitness culture for years. More recent research has softened this considerably.
Protein synthesis (the process by which muscles repair and grow) does remain elevated for several hours after exercise, not just the first 30 minutes. Consuming adequate total protein across the day matters more than the precise post-workout moment. A meal or snack with good-quality protein within a few hours of training is a reasonable goal, but obsessing over a narrow window is not necessary for most people exercising for general health.

Myth 6 — All Fat Is Bad
Low-fat products line supermarket shelves as a legacy of decades of dietary guidance that vilified fat in all forms. The science has moved considerably since then.
Dietary fat is essential. It is required for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K), building cell membranes, producing hormones and providing a concentrated energy source. The body cannot manufacture certain fatty acids — including omega-3 and omega-6 — so they must come from food.

Myth 7 — Superfoods Have Special Powers

The term "superfood" is also a marketing label, not a scientific classification. Regulatory bodies in many countries do not allow it in formal nutrition labelling for that reason.
Myth 8 — Sugar Causes Hyperactivity in Children
Parents have believed this for generations: give a child sweets and they will bounce off the walls. It is a compelling idea — sugar is energy, children are energetic — but the controlled evidence does not support a causal link.
Multiple carefully conducted studies have given children either sugar or a placebo (like saccharin) without telling parents or children which was which. Parents who believed their child had consumed sugar rated their behaviour as more hyperactive, even when the child had actually had the placebo. This is a striking example of how expectations shape perception.
This does not mean excessive sugar is fine for children — high sugar intake is linked to dental cavities and may displace more nutritious foods. But sugar itself does not appear to cause hyperactive behaviour through a direct biological mechanism.
Building a More Evidence-Based Approach to Eating
The antidote to nutrition myths is not a strict rulebook — it is a critical-thinking habit. When you encounter a bold nutritional claim, it is worth asking: who is making this claim, what is their evidence, and do they have a financial interest in your belief?

Myth 9 — Everyone Should Avoid Gluten
Gluten-free products line entire supermarket sections, and many people adopt gluten-free diets in the belief that gluten is harmful to everyone. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. For people with coeliac disease — an autoimmune condition affecting roughly 1% of the population — consuming gluten triggers an immune response that damages the small intestine. For them, strict avoidance is medically necessary.
For people with a clinically recognised non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, reducing gluten may relieve symptoms. But for the majority of people who do not have either condition, there is no established health benefit to removing gluten from the diet. In fact, many gluten-free processed foods replace wheat with refined starches and added sugars to achieve a similar texture, which is not necessarily a nutritional improvement.

Your body maintains blood pH within a very narrow range (approximately 7.35–7.45) through highly efficient buffer systems in the kidneys, lungs and blood. If blood pH strayed significantly outside this range, it would constitute a medical emergency. Foods do not meaningfully change blood pH in healthy people. Urine pH can vary with diet, but urine is already a waste product — its pH does not reflect blood pH.
Many foods promoted in alkaline diets — vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes — are genuinely nutritious. The nutritional value of eating more vegetables is real; the mechanism proposed by alkaline diet advocates is not.
Myth 11 — Probiotic Supplements Guarantee Good Gut Health
The gut microbiome — the trillions of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms living in your digestive tract — is a genuinely fascinating and important area of research. The marketing around probiotic supplements, however, often runs far ahead of the science.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, may confer a health benefit. The evidence for specific probiotic strains in specific conditions (certain types of diarrhoea, some digestive symptoms) is reasonably good. The evidence for general-purpose probiotic supplements improving gut health in healthy adults is much weaker. Many supplements also lack evidence that the strains survive digestion in sufficient numbers to reach the gut.
The dietary habits that most consistently support a diverse gut microbiome are well-established and far cheaper: eating a wide variety of plant foods (vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds), getting adequate dietary fibre, and minimising ultra-processed food intake. These provide the substrate — prebiotic fibre — that beneficial gut bacteria feed on.
Myth 12 — You Can Permanently "Boost" Your Metabolism
Countless products — green tea extracts, capsaicin supplements, various spices — are marketed as metabolism boosters. The reality is more modest.
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) — the energy your body uses at rest — is primarily determined by body size, body composition (muscle vs. fat), age and genetics. Some foods and substances do slightly increase metabolic rate temporarily (caffeine and capsaicin have small, transient effects), but these effects are modest and diminish with habitual use.
Building muscle through strength training does modestly increase BMR over time, because muscle tissue uses more energy at rest than fat tissue. This is probably the most effective legitimate "metabolic boost" available — but it takes sustained effort rather than a pill or powder. What the Evidence Does Support
After dismantling myths, it is worth ending with what nutrition research does consistently show to support health. The following broad dietary patterns have robust evidence behind them:
- Eating plenty of vegetables and fruits of varied colours and types.
- Choosing whole grains over refined grains most of the time.
- Getting adequate dietary protein from a mix of plant and/or animal sources.
- Limiting ultra-processed foods — those with long ingredient lists of added sugars, refined fats and artificial additives.
- Staying well hydrated, primarily with water.
- Not smoking, limiting alcohol intake, and maintaining physical activity — factors that interact with nutrition to affect overall health.
