What Nails Are
Nails are hard, protective coverings on the tips of fingers and toes. Like hair, they are made almost entirely of keratin — a tough, fibrous protein that the body also uses to build the outer layer of skin. The visible nail plate is composed of many layers of flattened, dead cells densely packed with keratin. Because these cells are dead, nails themselves feel nothing; the sensitivity in your fingertips comes from the highly innervated skin beneath and around the nail, not the nail itself.
Nails serve several practical purposes. They protect the sensitive tips of the digits from mechanical damage, they allow the fingertip to grip and manipulate small objects, and they enable scratching — a surprisingly useful sensory and grooming function. The Anatomy of a Nail
What you see when you look at a finger or toe is only part of the nail's full structure. The key parts include:
- Nail plate — the hard, visible sheet of keratin that most people think of as "the nail." It sits on top of the nail bed.
- Nail bed — the soft tissue directly beneath the nail plate, packed with blood vessels that give the nail its pinkish colour through the translucent plate.
- Nail matrix — the most important part, hidden beneath the skin at the base of the nail. This is the growth zone where new nail cells (called onychocytes) are continuously produced. The front edge of the matrix is visible as the whitish, half-moon shaped area called the lunula.
- Cuticle (eponychium) — the thin fold of skin that seals the gap between the nail plate and the skin at the base, protecting the matrix from infection.
- Hyponychium — the skin beneath the free edge of the nail at the fingertip, another seal that keeps bacteria and debris from getting under the nail.
- Nail folds — folds of skin on the sides and base of the nail that help anchor it in place.
How Nail Growth Works
Nail growth begins in the matrix. Cells in the matrix divide rapidly, pushing older cells forward along the nail bed. As cells are pushed further from the matrix, they flatten, fill with keratin, and die — stacking up in organised layers to form the growing nail plate. The nail plate slides forward continuously as new cells form behind it.
This means that the nail you can see today was produced by cells dividing weeks or months ago. The nail plate is essentially a permanent record of matrix activity over time. If anything disrupted nail production during that period — illness, stress, or injury — evidence of it may appear as a groove or discolouration that travels outward along the nail as it grows.
Growth is not uniform across the nail. The central part of the nail plate tends to grow slightly faster than the edges, which is why nails naturally develop a gentle curve rather than growing completely flat.
Growth Rates — Fingers vs Toes
Fingernails grow about 3 to 4 mm per month on average, roughly three to four times faster than toenails, which grow approximately 1 to 1.5 mm per month. This means a completely replaced fingernail takes roughly 4 to 6 months to grow in, while a toenail may take 12 to 18 months.
Several factors influence growth rate:
- Age: Nails grow fastest during youth and adolescence and slow gradually with age.
- Dominant hand: Nails on the dominant hand tend to grow slightly faster, possibly because increased use encourages blood flow to the fingertips.
- Season and temperature: Nails grow a little faster in warmer months, thought to be related to improved peripheral circulation in warmth.
- Nutrition: Severe nutritional deficiencies can slow nail growth; adequate protein, iron, and certain vitamins support normal nail production.
- Health conditions and medications: Various illnesses and some medications can affect nail growth rate or appearance.

What Nails Can Tell You About Health
Nails can sometimes reflect what is happening inside the body. Doctors and nurses often examine nails as part of a routine assessment, because changes in nail appearance can be associated with various health conditions. This does not mean every unusual nail is a medical problem — many changes are entirely harmless — but some patterns are worth knowing about.
- Pale or white nail beds: Can sometimes reflect anaemia (low red blood cells) or other circulatory changes.
- Blue-tinted nails: May indicate reduced oxygen in the blood (cyanosis) and should be evaluated by a doctor.
- Pitting (small dents in the nail surface): Often associated with psoriasis or certain other skin and joint conditions.
- Beau's lines (horizontal ridges): Deep grooves that run across the nail, which can form after a serious illness, high fever, or significant nutritional disruption temporarily halted nail growth.
- Clubbing (curved, bulging nail tips): Can be a sign of lung or heart conditions and warrants medical attention.
- Vertical ridges: Very common and usually harmless, often becoming more prominent with age.

Common Nail Conditions and Care
Nails are durable but not invulnerable. Several common conditions affect them:
- Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis): The most common nail disorder. Fungi invade the nail plate, causing it to thicken, discolour (often yellowish or brown), and become brittle. Toenails are more frequently affected than fingernails. Treatment typically requires antifungal medication and can take many months.
- Ingrown nails (onychocryptosis): The nail edge grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. This is particularly common in toenails and can be triggered by cutting nails too short at the corners or wearing ill-fitting footwear.
- Paronychia: An infection of the skin around the nail, usually caused by bacteria entering through a break in the cuticle or skin fold. It causes redness, swelling, and soreness.
These conditions are best assessed and treated by a doctor or podiatrist. Attempting to self-treat, especially by cutting or digging around the nail, can worsen infections or injuries.
Nails and Hair — Siblings in Keratin
Nails and hair are closely related structures. Both are epidermal appendages — specialised outgrowths of the skin's outer layer (epidermis). Both are made primarily of keratin. Both grow from a matrix of dividing cells and produce dead, keratin-packed cells that build up into a visible structure. And both can be affected by similar nutritional and hormonal influences.
One key difference is that hair can be shed and regrown from the same follicle repeatedly throughout life, while nails grow continuously in one direction from a fixed matrix. If a hair follicle is destroyed, hair in that spot may be permanently lost; if a nail matrix is intact, the nail always grows back.
