The cell is the smallest unit of life, and your body is built from roughly 37 trillion of them. That number is almost impossible to picture — if you counted one per second, you would need more than a million years to finish.

Despite their tiny size, cells are extraordinarily complex. A single red blood cell carries around 270 million haemoglobin molecules, each capable of picking up four oxygen atoms at once.

Your DNA, if unwound and laid end to end from a single cell, would stretch about two metres. Multiply that by every cell in your body and you get a strand long enough to reach the sun and back — roughly 150 times.

Your body produces and destroys around 3.8 million red blood cells every second. These cells live for roughly 120 days before being broken down, mostly in the spleen and liver.

If you stretched out all the blood vessels in one adult human body — arteries, veins and capillaries — they would circle Earth roughly two and a half times. That is about 100,000 kilometres of tubing.

Blood makes up about seven to eight per cent of your body weight. In a 70-kilogram adult, that is roughly five litres of blood. A single drop contains around five million red blood cells.

Babies are born with around 270 to 300 bones. By adulthood, many of these have fused together, leaving most adults with 206. The fusion process is mostly complete by the mid-twenties.

Bone is not inert. It is living tissue, constantly being broken down and rebuilt in a process called bone remodelling. Your skeleton is essentially completely replaced about every ten years.

Ounce for ounce, bone is stronger than steel. A block of compact bone the size of a matchbox can bear loads of up to nine tonnes before failing.

The strongest muscle in the body — relative to its size — is often said to be the masseter, the jaw muscle. It can exert a biting force of around 70 kilograms on the back molars.

A human egg is one of the largest cells in the body, visible to the naked eye at about 0.1 millimetres across. Sperm, in contrast, are among the smallest — each only about 0.05 millimetres long.

Skin repairs minor cuts through a well-orchestrated four-stage process: clotting, inflammation, proliferation and remodelling. A small surface wound can be closed within days; deeper injuries take longer but follow the same script.

The liver is one of the few organs that can regenerate substantially. After surgically removing up to 70 per cent of a healthy liver, it can regrow close to its original mass within a few weeks — a feat no other internal organ can match.

Bone fractures heal through a process involving a temporary cartilage scaffold called a callus, which is gradually replaced by new bone tissue. The process can take weeks to months depending on the bone and the person's overall health.
