The Body Is Stranger Than Fiction

The human body has been studied for centuries, and yet it continues to surprise scientists and educators alike. Some of its most remarkable properties are not exotic discoveries — they are everyday facts about the machinery running inside you right now.

Blood and Circulation: Staggering Scale

Your circulatory system is vast. Laid end to end, all the blood vessels in a single adult body — arteries, veins and capillaries — would stretch for approximately 100,000 kilometres. That is about two and a half times the circumference of the Earth.

Most of that length is accounted for by capillaries, the finest blood vessels, which are so narrow that red blood cells must pass through them in single file. These tiny vessels are what actually deliver oxygen and nutrients to almost every cell in the body.

The heart beats around 100,000 times per day without rest, pumping about five litres of blood per minute at rest — a volume that can rise to 20–25 litres per minute during intense exercise in a fit individual. The Brain: A Power-Hungry Supercomputer

The adult human brain weighs about 1.3–1.4 kg and contains roughly 86 billion neurons (nerve cells). Each neuron can form thousands of connections, called synapses, with other neurons. The estimated number of synapses in the human brain runs to around 100 trillion.

Despite accounting for only about 2% of body weight, the brain consumes approximately 20% of the body's total energy — even while you are doing nothing particularly demanding. The brain has no energy storage of its own, so it depends on a constant supply of glucose and oxygen from the blood. Even a few seconds of interrupted blood flow begins to impair function.

The brain generates electrical activity measurable as brainwaves. Different brainwave patterns correspond to different states of consciousness — deep sleep produces slow delta waves, relaxed wakefulness produces alpha waves, and active thinking is associated with faster beta waves.

Bones: Stronger Than You Think

Bone gets an undeserved reputation for fragility. Compact bone (the dense outer layer) is actually stronger than reinforced concrete when forces are applied along its length. A block of compact bone the size of a matchbox can bear a load of roughly 8,000 kg before breaking.

Your Gut Has Its Own Nervous System

The digestive tract contains a web of roughly 100–500 million neurons forming the enteric nervous system — sometimes called the "gut brain" or "second brain." This network can operate independently of the central nervous system and governs the complex muscular contractions (peristalsis) that move food along.

The gut and brain communicate constantly via the vagus nerve and through hormones, which is why digestive symptoms and mood are often linked. The gut also hosts the microbiome — trillions of microorganisms, mostly bacteria, that assist with digestion, produce certain vitamins and contribute to immune function. Skin: The Body's Underrated Organ

Skin is the body's largest organ by surface area. In an average adult it covers roughly 1.5–2 square metres and weighs around 3–4 kg. It is constantly renewing itself: the outer layer sheds approximately 30,000 to 40,000 cells every hour. Over a year, you shed several kilograms of skin cells.

Skin is far more than a covering. It manufactures vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, acts as a waterproof barrier against infection, regulates body temperature through sweating and blood flow changes, and houses sensory receptors for touch, pressure, temperature and pain.

  • The eye can detect a single photon of light in a dark-adapted state — essentially the minimum possible unit of light.
  • The kidneys filter the entire blood supply roughly 40 times per day, processing about 180 litres of fluid from which nearly all of it is reabsorbed, leaving only 1–2 litres of urine.
  • Stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) is strong enough to dissolve many metals. The stomach lining replaces itself every few days to prevent self-digestion.
  • The small intestine is about 6–7 metres long and its inner lining is folded into millions of tiny projections called villi and microvilli, giving it a surface area of roughly 250 square metres — about the floor area of a large flat.
  • During a lifetime, the average person produces about 25,000 litres of saliva — enough to fill two swimming pools.
