Why Body Myths Persist
Myths about the human body are remarkably stubborn. Once a claim gets repeated often enough — in school, on television or online — it takes on the feel of established fact. Some of these myths are harmless curiosities, but others can lead people to make poor decisions about their health.

Myth: We Only Use 10% of Our Brains
This is probably the most persistently repeated myth in popular science. The idea is that most of the brain lies dormant, waiting to be unlocked. It is completely false.
Brain imaging techniques such as fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) show that virtually every part of the brain is active at some point — and many regions are active simultaneously during most tasks. Over the course of a day, all major brain areas show significant activity.
From an evolutionary perspective, the myth also makes little sense. The brain accounts for only about 2% of body weight but consumes roughly 20% of the body's total energy. Carrying around a largely useless organ at such metabolic cost would be a severe disadvantage.

Myth: Cracking Your Knuckles Causes Arthritis
Parents and teachers have issued this warning for generations. The evidence does not support it.
The sound of cracking knuckles comes from a pressure change inside the joint. Synovial fluid — the lubricating liquid inside joints — contains dissolved gases. When the joint is rapidly pulled apart, a cavity forms and a gas bubble collapses, producing the characteristic pop. This is called tribonucleation.
Multiple studies, including one long-running informal study by a physician who deliberately cracked the knuckles of one hand for 60 years but not the other, have found no link between habitual knuckle-cracking and arthritis. Habitual cracking may be associated with temporary swelling and slightly reduced grip strength in some heavy long-term crackers, but arthritis is not a demonstrated consequence.
Myth: Humans Have Only Five Senses
The classical list — sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch — goes back to ancient philosophy. It is a useful starting point but a significant undercount.
Scientists recognise several additional senses that the body uses continuously:
- Proprioception — the sense of where your body parts are in space, even with your eyes closed. Try touching your nose with a fingertip with your eyes shut — that is proprioception at work.
- Vestibular sense (balance) — the inner ear detects head movement and orientation relative to gravity.
- Nociception — the detection of potentially damaging stimuli that the brain interprets as pain.
- Thermoception — the ability to sense temperature, distinct from touch.
- Interoception — awareness of internal body states such as hunger, thirst, heartbeat and breathlessness.
Some researchers count more than twenty distinct sensory systems depending on how finely they are categorised.

Myth: You Swallow Eight Spiders Per Year in Your Sleep
This one is almost certainly invented — possibly as an example of what sorts of false "facts" spread on early internet lists.
In reality, sleeping humans generate considerable vibrations through breathing, heartbeats, and movement. Spiders are extremely sensitive to vibrations — it is how they detect prey and danger. A sleeping human represents an alarming, not welcoming, environment for a spider. There is no scientific evidence supporting this claim, and the "eight per year" figure has no known origin in research.
Myth: Going Out with Wet Hair Gives You a Cold
Colds are caused by viruses — most commonly rhinoviruses — not by cold air or wet hair. You cannot catch a cold unless you are exposed to the virus.
The myth likely persists because colds are more common in winter, when people spend more time indoors in close contact with others, and when some viruses survive and spread more readily in cold, dry air. Being cold may mildly affect some aspects of immune function, but direct exposure to a cold virus remains the necessary condition for infection.
Controlled experiments in which participants were deliberately exposed to cold virus showed no increased infection rates among those who were chilled versus those who were comfortable. Getting chilled is uncomfortable, but it does not turn the air around you into a cold virus.
More Myths, Briefly Addressed
"Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight." Dim light may cause eye strain and temporary discomfort, but there is no evidence it causes permanent damage to the eyes or vision.
"You lose most of your body heat through your head." The head loses heat proportional to its surface area relative to the rest of the body — no more. This myth may have originated from old military studies in which subjects wore cold-weather suits everywhere except their heads. Of course the head then lost the most heat. Cover up in the cold, but no single body part needs special priority.
"Humans have more DNA than other animals." Some of the most complex genomes belong to surprisingly simple organisms. The marbled lungfish has a genome about 40 times larger than the human genome. Genome size does not correlate neatly with biological complexity.
